David May Named ATA Driver of the Year

David May, a West Seneca, N.Y.-based driver for Con-way Freight, was named American Trucking Associations’ 2008 National Truck Driver of the Year.

May has driven over 1.4 million accident-free miles in his 27 years on the road, ATA said Monday.

In addition to his duties as a professional driver, May also works to educate the public about the trucking industry and safety, ATA President Bill Graves said in a statement. “We are proud to have David represent us on the road,” he said.

The announcement came this weekend at the ATA Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council’s Fall Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

May will also be recognized at ATA’s Management Conference and Exhibition Oct. 4-7 in New Orleans.

ATLANTA (AP) -- UPS Inc. expects its busiest day overall for shipping packages this year will be Dec. 18.

For the first time since it went public in 1999, the Atlanta-based company is forecasting how many packages it will ship that day. United Parcel Service also will not project how many seasonal employees it will hire this year to help it through the holiday shipping season that runs from Thanksgiving until Christmas.

The decision was prompted by weak October retail sales and the uncertainty of the upcoming holiday season amid the worst financial crisis to hit the U.S. in decades.

Last year, UPS, the world's largest shipping carrier, delivered more than 22 million packages on its peak shipping day, which was Dec. 19, and it hired about 60,000 seasonal employees.

UPS, FedEX shares rise on DHL job cuts

By Armando Duke

(AXcess News) Houston - DHL is throwing in the towel and shutting down all US express package shipping for domestic-only packages. The EU-based company said it would be cutting 9,500 jobs as a result.

When the market opened this morning investors rallied behind UPS Inc. (NYSE: UPS) and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) shares pushing the US-based express freight companies shares higher.

Deutche Post AG, which trades on Germany's Frankfurt Exchange, saw its shares rally, climbing 10% on the news. The EU-based company, which owns DHL, had already cut 5,400 jobs before announcing defeat in US-only domestic express package services before Monday's news of further job cuts was released.

While DHL plans on continuing its international package services to and from the United States, domestic ground and delivery services were being discontinued. DHL employs a total of 18,000 workers in the USA at its Express services division.

DHL will end domestic shipping on January 30th. Of the 412 domestic ground hubs and service centers, only 103 will remain and about 3,000 to 4,000 employees. Back in May DHL cut a deal with UPS to handle some of its air packages and through it, provide UPS with up to $1 billion in revenue over the next 10 years.

Shares of UPS rose $2.72, or 5.25%, to trade as high as $55.01 before settling back to the $54.50 range. FedEX shares were up nearly 4% on the news and reached a high this morning of nearly $68.
